How does Japanese spend the new year's day?

In Japan, we celebrate new years day in our original way.

<Praying to Sun Rise>
In our culture, seeing sun rising on the 1st day of new year is very special because we believe God is rising with the sun.  We thank and pray for God for the safety and healthy life. Not everyone go to see the sun rising, however many people do this every year.

<Hatsumode (New Year's visit to a Shinto shrine)>
On the 1st day of Jan. many Japanese go to Shinto shrine or temple to pray.  I went to Kibune Shrine near my house.  I draw a lottery and got Hamaya (ritual arrows to drive away devils) . Drawing a fortune slip is also popular.

<New Year's Card>
Instead of  sending Christmas cards, we exchange New Year's card to our friends, family and business relationships. 12 characters of the year are commonly used on the cards. This year is wild boar year, so I saw many of them.

<Otoshidama (Money Gift for kids)>
Kids get money gift(called Otoshidama) from their parents and relatives.
Adults prepare envelope just for Otoshidama.

<Eating Special Dish "Osechi" with family>

“Osechi” is the special traditional dish for the New Year’s Day.
We also call it “osechi-ryori”. Its dishes are packed beautifully in layers of lacquer boxes called “jubako”. The kinds of osechi-ryori dishes prepared at Japanese homes vary from region to region.

A must-eat dish when you visit Nagoya area in Japan

Did you know that Nagoya area has its own food culture? Since my town Seki is close to Nagoya, we share the same food cultures. People in this area love Anko(sweet bean paste), Aka-miso(red miso) , and grilled eel bowl. Seki has many popular Eel bowl restaurants.    Most of you may not be familiar with eel, but grilled eel bowl is a must- eat dish! It is very popular in Japan especially summer season because eel is an energetic food and also delicious. Eels are eaten on the midsummer day of the ox or in order to prevent exhaustion from the summer heat. On this day, the air around grilled eel restaurants are filled with the scents and we cannot resist eating them! On the midsummer day, people make a big line to eat grilled eel bowl. Japanese summer is getting really hot lately, if you have a chance to visit Nagoya, please drop in Seki and eat grilled eel bowl and also visit Washokuju- Sakura!  <Japanese Cooking class & Home stay "Washokuju Sa...
